Female Krogan by Asurael-Returns Female Krogan by Asurael-Returns
First of all I must state that this is official Mass Effect concept art and that I take no credit for it. This is copyrighted material. All I've really done is photoshop the male krogan to what I believe a female krogan would look like.

Now that that's out of the way, I'll explain my thought process. I started by trying to remove all traits that would be distinctively male, meaning all traits that males would use to impress females, such as the larger hump, larger jaw and the spikier bits in their plate armor. After that I decided to widen the hips a bit, a distinctive female trait due to child birth. I even slightly slimmed down the waist.

What I imagined of Krogan childbirth is that they wouldn't lay eggs, instead they would give birth like mammals, only without going through the stage of breast feeding, meaning no breasts. I imagine Krogan children would be eating solids practically from birth and already be quite self reliant, something like an 8 year old human child. This would make sense with the "rapid expansion" idea of the Krogans from before the Genophage. I dont think the children (or runts) would even be entirely raised by females, rather, they'd be raised by their clan. Being trained for battle from birth.

Given all this, I think the female krogan would look as such, not very different from males, but different enough to serve practical uses. The mention of a female warlord in the game was already enough of a giveaway to make me think females are just as capable at fighting as males.

Oh, and the female with make-up pic was partially just for fun, but I do think the violet eye shadow makes it look better and more female, the lipstick was just for kicks :P.

The first thing that caught my eye was the change in the hump. I can agree somewhat that it can be viewed as a something essential for all krogan, especially since EDI once comments about krogan being able to survive for a time through the nutrients stored in their hump. And since female krogan are the ones who carry the children, it seems like they should have a hump either the same or just larger than the standard male so they'd be able to provide nutrients for both the unborn as well as themselves, just in case they were ever cut off from external food sources.

That said, I like how you didn't change the height or anything too significant. Definitely suits the idea of a female krogan. Nicely done.

I agree that the function of humps would make them just as necessary for females, but it seemed to me that after a certain point, the size of humps started being simply aesthetic and mostly just bone/shell. Eve, seen in ME3 did seem to have a normal sized hump, though, but with all the clothes it was difficult to really compare. For the most part, she looked mostly like any other Male Krogan. I really agreed with her voice, it suited her well, and would most likely be one of the few ways for non-Krogan to distinguish Male Krogans from Female Krogans.

females dont have to allways be smaller than the males. in therms of protecting their children. so the female krogan could look even more battle-made than the males ;P

Indeed, and if you see my female Salarian you'll notice that she's actually taller than the male versions. But I don't think the female Krogans would be better fir for battle or even look it more, not that it's not possible, only that if that were the case then their society would put much more emphasis on their war-like aspect, and there would be much more female Krogan leaders. And of course there's the damning evidence with Eve who shows up in ME3, who though it too covered up, can noticeably be appreciated to be the same size as Wrex.

Well, supposedly they're inspired off of dinosaurs and sharks. Maybe it's the belly that reminds you of cockroaches.

Very nice! I always had a hard time picturing what a female krogan would look like, since we only ever see the males. This is a very realistic and well-thought design. :)

I love the thought that's gone into this. At a quick glance you might not notice a difference, but on examination they're distinct.

Not bad, but I think Females would look a little bit more different. Somewhat thinner, wider childbearing (egg laying?) hips, maybe stand more upright than males because I assume they don't have humps.

And reptilian or not, it is possible for them to have breast. If a earth mammal can have venom glands, a bill and lay eggs (Platypus), which are reptilian and avian traits, it impossible for a female of an alien reptilian species to have breast.

Although, given they're short childhood stage they may not have them, or evolved them away if they did at all.

pretty good. From what little we know krogen females are supposed to be smaller then the males. They can fight but most of the time they don't.

Krogans are smaller? =O, where did you get that reference? If you mean the dead female krogan on the operations table in ME2, I really wouldn't use that as a reference, to me that just seemed like lazy modelling, probably recycling from Mordin's clinic.

lol, too many alien females have boobs XD shouldnt be the base of how a gender is defined. I like this idea, only the face bugs me. I dunno why but the mouth area almost seems puckered. Otherwise I really like this design ^^

well i figure they'd have them since they don't lay eggs from what I understand meaning they're warm blood and thus they'd drink milk

Reptiles don't need boobs, and krogan are described as reptilian.

You can get stillborns with reptiles, my female boa gave birth to a litter of 31 babies of which 8 were stillborn.

hm, ever heard of 'duds'? That could essentially be considered the same as a still born.

actually dud eggs are unfertilized eggs that are laid after sex with a male and female animal

which is not a stillborn.

I am more meaning under that concept, and yes there are fertilized eggs that still count as duds. (Understand my only experience is my family when for about a year we watched over a small chicken based farm for a year)

The term dud means a laid egg not fertilized after sex. what you're referring to if possible is probably named something else. get back to me when you know the term cause I don't know it

Talked to the farmer that we helped out for a year, and they said they don't know they just call them duds, and I really can't find any reference to it anywhere else.

According to the Mass Effect Wiki, the only Krogan ever seen in the game was the one laying on the table under a tarp during Mordin's loyalty mission.
It's also said on the Wiki that Krogan lay clutches of eggs that supposedly can produce 1000 live babies.
This is probably before the Genophage, though.
